Oscar De La Hoya Wants 70-30 Revenue Split, Manny Pacquiao Wants at Least 40%

The boxing match that would unquestionably be the biggest of the year -- Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao -- will apparently not take place because the fighters can't agree on a revenue split.

According to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com, De La Hoya has insisted that he should receive 70% of the revenue from their fight, which could easily make $100 million. Pacquiao's camp realizes that De La Hoya is the bigger draw and will get the bigger slice of the pie, but the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world won't settle for less than 40%.

I would love to see a De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight, mostly because I think Pacquaio is the best thing going in boxing right now, and fighting De La Hoya would expose him to the biggest audience possible. But even though De La Hoya and Pacquiao both agreed that they would split their significant weight difference in and fight at 147 pounds, they couldn't agree on how to split the dollars. So the fight appears to be off.

Olympic Boxer Gary Russell Jr. Collapses During Last-Ditch Effort to Make Weight

American boxer Gary Russell Jr. is out of the Olympics after collapsing this morning in Beijing while trying to make weight.

Russell, a 20-year-old southpaw who was expected to be a medal contender in the 119-pound class, was found at about 2:30 a.m. by his roommate and fellow American boxer, Luis Yanez. He was described as "extremely dehydrated."

A 2004 Junior Olympic boxing champion, Russell has a history of injury and health issues. He was putting off shoulder surgery until after the Games, and he has missed events in the past with broken hands.

Russell is being treated in Beijing now, and his blood pressure has stabilized, but he did not attend this morning's weigh-in, meaning his Olympic dreams are over.

Boxing Top 25: Antonio Margarito-Miguel Cotto Shakes Up the Pound-for-Pound Rankings

Antonio Margarito knocked out Miguel Cotto on Saturday night in one of the best fights in recent memory, a fight that established Margarito's greatness, slightly tarnished Cotto's previously spotless resume, and gave fans more than their money's worth.

It was also a fight that showed that even after the retirement of pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, the state of boxing is strong. We explore just how strong with our list of the Top 25 pound-for-pound boxers in the world.

Antonio Margarito KOs Miguel Cotto

Antonio Margarito upset Miguel Cotto tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, winning the WBA welterweight title with an active, powerful boxing exhibition, and shaking up the welterweight division in the process.

It was more a technical boxing match than the experts expected early, but Margarito turned it into a brawl late. Margarito was winning on two of the three judges' scorecards after the 10th round, and he won the fight with two knockdowns in the 11th. After the second knockdown, Cotto's mouth and nose were bloodied and battered, and his corner waved the towel and the ref stopped the fight.

The Puerto Rican Cotto entered the ring undefeated but now falls to 32-1. The Mexican Margarito, with the best win of his career, improved to 37-5. These are two of the best fighters in the world, and they gave the fans their money's worth.

Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito HBO Video

HBO has done something really smart in promoting Saturday night's Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight on pay-per-view: It posted the full Countdown to Cotto-Margarito video on YouTube:

The fight should be a great one, and HBO's Countdown series is always excellent. HBO was smart to put this video online, and I think it will convince more than a few people to buy the pay-per-view broadcast.

I've bought the pay-per-view broadcast, and I'll be live blogging it Saturday night here at FanHouse.

World Chess Boxing Championship Highlights

For those who have never seen chess boxing, here's a highlight reel from the world championships, which took place in Berlin last week:

Nikolay Sazhin beat Frank Stoldt in the final as 1,000 fans looked on.

For the uninitiated, chess boxing is exactly what it sounds like -- half chess, half boxing, alternating playing chess for a few minutes with boxing for a few minutes, with matches ending by a checkmate or a knockout. The sport's governing body is the World Chess Boxing Organization.
