Michael Vick, Mike Tyson and Barry Bonds Can't Stop Us From Loving Sports

Today might seem like a bad day for sports. Suspended Falcons quarterback Michael Vick starts a prison sentence for federal conspiracy charges related to dog fighting, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson gets sentenced to 24 hours in jail for cocaine possession and driving under the influence, and all-time home run king Barry Bonds faces perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

But today is a good day for sports. It's a day when even a team that got blown out has something to cheer about, it's a day when we're getting excited about a college football rivalry game that will mean more than ever this year, and it's a day when we learn that one baseball hero is staying put and another is returning to the place where he belongs.

I think we as American sports fans in 2007 have reached the point where we're not going to allow Vick, Tyson or Bonds to stop us from our love of sports. Maybe that's a bad thing: Maybe we've reached a point where we're so jaded that we just shrug at stuff like this. Maybe we should feel angry, or even outraged.

But I actually think it's a good thing. The best thing about sports is that we can enjoy them at almost any time, under almost any circumstances. We can always love sports, no matter how flawed some sportsmen are.
