Today might seem like a bad day for sports. Suspended Falcons quarterback Michael Vick starts a prison sentence for federal conspiracy charges related to dog fighting, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson gets sentenced to 24 hours in jail for cocaine possession and driving under the influence, and all-time home run king Barry Bonds faces perjury and obstruction of justice charges. But today is a good day for sports. It's a day when even a team that got blown out has something to cheer about, it's a day when we're getting excited about a college football rivalry game that will mean more than ever this year, and it's a day when we learn that one baseball hero is staying put and another is returning to the place where he belongs.
I think we as American sports fans in 2007 have reached the point where we're not going to allow Vick, Tyson or Bonds to stop us from our love of sports. Maybe that's a bad thing: Maybe we've reached a point where we're so jaded that we just shrug at stuff like this. Maybe we should feel angry, or even outraged.
But I actually think it's a good thing. The best thing about sports is that we can enjoy them at almost any time, under almost any circumstances. We can always love sports, no matter how flawed some sportsmen are.

Tyson only gets 24 hours in jail? What's the over/under on him breaking the law again and getting a little wrist slap again?
3 months? 6 months?

I really don't think Bonds belongs in the same sentence as Vick and Tyson.
On one hand you have a guy who allegedly (re likely) took a substance that does what? Allows someone to work twice as hard as the next guy with a quicker recovery time. If a guy is going to do drugs it might as well be one that has an ends justify the means feel. Not like he's on crack or coke, or popping pain killers. Too bad as he could go into broadcasting and/or be a media darling if that was the case.
Then you look at Vick the sadistic dog killer/no good piece of crap and Tyson the no good piece of crap rapist.
A guy like Leonard Little belongs in comparison not Bonds.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I have greatly cut down on my following of sports as the criminal element has increased.

I do think some of these sports figures have hurt how we look at the sport they represent in a more cynical, negative way. I look at the whole Falcons Org. with suspision with claims about not knowing Vick's involvement in dog fights. Come on, anyone with half a brain knows that if they questioned him then they knew SOMETHING, & could have investigated further if they wanted to. They chose to hide their heads in the sand, but it didn't go away. They are less than an honest organization & to me have zero integrity to let him continue for so long.

I hope that they find this latest ruling inconclusive with Barry. There should have been some king of prior warren of the Federal Case against him like In most cases. Barry is still the Home Run King in my eyes it takes a strong athlete to accomplish what he has in his career, what does not come in the wash will come out in the rinse. Barry good luck in court your have handle all the press so far good, and bad this is just one more hump you have to get over.www.worldclassskate.com God Bless You and Your Family

How can anyone possobly put Barry Bonds in the same catagory as Tyson or Vick? Bonds is being used as an example instead of the 25-30% of all players juicing.
Why not lgive all players amnesty and then come down really hard on all future juicers? If your goal is to stop usage, that will do it. Not punishing our heroes because MLB was a bad police force.

Are you kidding me? A cold blooded killer which is exactly what Vick is spices it up for you & you actually like hearing this kind of news? Tyson was jailed for rape, Bonds basically is self destructing.
Some of it makes me sick, but whatever gets you cranked..

Typical Michael David Smith Blog. Barry Bonds has not even had a court date and he puts him in the catagory of convicted felons. If it's not a black commentator he's tearing down, or a coach, it's an athlete. Time to put your white sheet on MDS.

Take a close look and tell me what all three of these "athletes" have in common other than knowlingly broke the law, Tyson and Vick are thugs and were meant for each other by all defintions, Bonds does not fit that description IMO.

Mike Tyson is a thug..who got taken advantage of by crooks (Don King) and went back to his old thug days..Michael Vick is a thug who should have been put in jail for knowling spreading herpes a long time ago...but what a dumbass he's supose to be a role model.this is what quick millions do to you..Barry bonds is a selfish punk but not a felon..so he took some juice..so do 80% of athletes.. why do football players get 5 day suspension for using performance drugs but Bonds may have to do jail time...Unless you can prove Babe Ruth and other legends never cheated then why does bonds have to do jail time for something there was no policy over....I don't like Bonds but this is getting to be alot of BS...Should the commisioner then have to do some jail time for acting like he didn't know this was going on...Every Atlete should have to take a drug test so we can get a real accurate number...amensty for the past stricter rules for the futer..let's move on

Sports are good for viewing for a short period of time but don't call atheles heroes because when they could set records at a regular season game they either leave the game or kneel down on the football to avoid the wrath of the opposing coach.
