Bernard Hopkins lost his world light heavyweight title to Joe Calzaghe tonight in Las Vegas, with Calzaghe scoring a solid split decision victory and erasing any doubt that he's one of the elite boxers in the world.
The scores were 114-113 for Hopkins, 115-112 for Calzaghe and 116-111 for Calzaghe. Hopkins entered the fight as the world light heavyweight champion; Calzaghe was the super middleweight champion.
Calzaghe went down just a minute into the first round, but he seemed more surprised than hurt when he hit the canvas, and after that he was clearly the better fighter. Calzaghe controlled the tempo of the fight and set the tone, although Hopkins showed his typical superior defense.
The fight was not without controversy. Calzaghe landed two low blows, and the second, in the 10th round, caused Hopkins to take the full allotment of five minutes to recover, wincing in pain throughout, although he may have been engaging in some theatrics. Hopkins also had his share of questionable to cheap shots, although ref Joe Cortez never took a point away from either fighter.
Calzaghe improved his perfect record to 45-0. Hopkins falls to 48-5-1.

Well! Joe Calzaghe might as well -"retire"- right now and start investing in the business sense. If you keep going and going and going it WILL happen the boer WILL lose! "Add the page to boxing's splendid and long history!"

Hopkins put on a great act for the low blows! He was hit low no harder than he hit Calzahage with low blows during the fight. The second one was so obvious he did it (bent over etc) to get a breather. Hopkins is in GREAT shape for 43 y.o., put on a good show. Too bad, but he was just out-boxed. I will not mention further the one score for Hopkins...it was obvious who would have seen it that way.

The Calzaghe Hopkins left much to be desired in terms of a championshp fight. The fight failed to up to the hipe and there was little action in th etwelve round fight.
My conclusion after watching the fight it that Hopkins skills have deteriorated and Calzaghe did not impress me as a great fighter nowithstanding is record.

What controversy? Calzaghe won this fight easy. Outside of the first round, Hopkins only landed about 5 meaningful punches while Calzaghe methodically stalked him around the ring and ripped punches.
The fact that an American judge saw it for Hopkins shows that there is still an Anti-Europe bias in boxing. Calzaghe won that fight 8 rounds to 4 or more.

There was no controversy. Calzaghe won that fight easily. 116-111 sounds right. You could see Hopkins breaking down in round 11/12. Calzaghe chased him long enough and scored enough. If it were not for the 1st round knockdown, this would've been considered Hopkins worst performance ever.
I wonder if that female scoring judge is still going to receive her money now that Hopkins lost. What a joke.

Oh please with anti-euro whining at best this fight was a draw. Hopkins threw the more telling blows but its was one punch and done. Calzaghe made if it was bad episode of Benny Hill show, with all that slapping. Should there be a rematch no, but if I was Joe I would be calling out Roy Jones name right now, if I was him moving up to light heavy could be a mistake. Much as hate to say it you still have Antonia Tarver, Chad Dawson (who is more vunerable)and Glen Johnson who could all beat Joe very easily. I haven't mention Pavlik who could easily beat at either 168 or 175.

Great Victory.
The Racist is down.
There was no knock down in the first round, Joe had fallen back by innertion since he was very low with his head down. Bernard just pushed him with a hand.
This fight has only proved that Calzaghe has a very strong chin.
Hop should watch his filthy mouth next time, otherwise Kelly Pavlik might wrip his head off.
P.S.: If the fight was on the British soil, there would not be even close split decision.

Oh, please enough with the African affirmative whining action.
The RACIST Bernard Hop is down. He had lost his bad mouth and Joe took him as a girl from behind.

I may get some negative comments about this but I happen to think that whenever a split decision happens that some sort of rematch clause should be in the contract in such an occasion, regardless of who is fighting. Someone suggested that Joe should fight tarver, as far as who would win, it would make little sense to think tarver can beat Joe since Tarver got beat by Hopkins whom Joe just beat, but he could get more belts if he beats tarver assuming he cared about that. If Joe really wants to add some major credibility beyond what he currently has then a fight with Pavlik vs. Calzaghe would certainly remove a lot of doubt that Joe is on another level assuming he can beat Pavlik. Someone would have to adjust their weight but that should not be a problem.

Joe Calzaghe is a fraud. He finally fought somebody when they were well past their prime. He has never fought anyone in their prime. He is a disgrace to boxing. He is arrogant. His low blows in the Hopkins fight should have resulted in a subtraction from his score. You are a fraud Joey...
