Wladimir Klitschko is the heavyweight champion of the world, in the sense that he's putting a couple of heavyweight title belts on the line when he fights Tony Thompson in Germany tomorrow, and in the sense that he's the top-rated heavyweight according to The Ring.
But Klitschko has had so many lackluster performances -- including a lopsided but dull unanimous decision victory over Sultan Ibragimov in his last fight -- that hardly anyone is talking about his fight with Thompson, even though it's just over 24 hours away. That's why Klitschko needs not just to win, but to dominate.
The Bodog odds overwhelmingly favor Klitschko to do just that:
The odds strongly suggest that Klitschko should knock Thompson out, and if he doesn't, I think he's rapidly running out of time to ever garner recognition as a great heavyweight. At age 32, Klitschko could still have several years of boxing left in him, but he doesn't have much time left to make his case that he's a great fighter, and not just the biggest fish in a small heavyweight pond.Wladimir Klitschko by KO,TKO, or DQ -140
Wladimir Klitschko by Decision +240
Tony Thompson by KO,TKO, or DQ +640
Tony Thompson by Decision +1900
Draw
+3200

MDS - I don't really think that a KO prop bet at (-140) shows an "overwhelming" likelihood of a Klitschko knockout. I think it's an indication of the general public's irritation with him that he's only slightly better than 50/50 to knock out Thompson. Tony Thompson is a club-fighter in any other decade - the fact that he's getting a title shot is an indictment of the state of today's heavyweight division. Klitschko will knock him out in the middle rounds, and if gambling were legal (wink, wink), I'd back that up with my wallet.

Excellent points, Oak. The fact that Thompson is probably America's best heavyweight boxer right now says a little about him and a lot about the state of American heavyweight boxing. If Thompson wins, he'll be by far the lowest-profile and least-skilled American heavyweight champ ever.

Those two dudes look like they're about to start making out, not bash each others skulls in.

The Heavyweight Division right now really has nothing going. There aren't any two heavyweights that I can think of that I would care to see fight at this time. At this point I would rather see Kelly Pavlick, Joe Calzagie, or Oscar, in other words any of the other divisions over the Heavyweights!
