How Roy Jones Can Beat Joe Calzaghe: Throw Combinations, Stay Off the Ropes

Text Size A A A
The great boxing historian Bert Sugar appeared on a Detroit radio show and gave his thoughts on how Roy Jones can beat Joe Calzaghe on Saturday night:

"Jones could win. I'd be surprised, I wouldn't be shocked," Sugar said. "He's going to have to do a couple of things."

"Number one is, throw more than one punch at a time because Calzaghe is a sort of human Eveready Bunny in the ring," Sugar said. "And number two, he's going to have to stay off the ropes and quit putting his hands up around his ears as earmuffs because that doesn't seem to help him when the other guy is throwing punches."

Aside form his weird reference to the "Eveready Bunny," that's a pretty sound analysis of what Jones needs to do. A simpler way of saying it: Stay active. There's a lot of talk that the 39-year-old Jones has lost his quickness, and that's the basic reason I'm picking Calzaghe to win, but if Jones can throw a high volume of punches at Calzaghe on Saturday night, he can pull the upset.

We'll have a Jones-Calzaghe live blog Saturday night at FanHouse.
