The above picture shows the midsection of the boxer Gabe Brown, who fought on the undercard of tonight's Roy Jones Jr.-Joe Calzaghe fight, and that midsection says a lot about why boxing undercards are so dull.
Basically, boxing undercards have become a collection of has-beens, never-weres and fat guys. It's embarrassing to watch the undercard of a great fight like Jones-Calzaghe and see that most of the seats in the arena are empty, and the fans who are there don't care.
I mean no disrespect to Brown, or to any other fat people. I could stand to lose a few pounds myself. But if your undercard is stocked with fighters who don't even care enough to get in shape for their fights, how can you expect the fans to care?
For the record, Brown, who tips the scales at 350 pounds, lost a unanimous decision to the 225-pound Dominick Guinn. The 36-year-old Brown has a career record of 18-9-4, including 0-3-3 in his last six fights.
Below, see another photo of Brown, gasping for air between rounds during his match against Guinn.

One look at that fat slob who has no self respect nor respect for his sport and that is why MMA fighting has surpassed boxing in the public appetite.

Mr. Smith I really don't appreciate your assumption about the under cards not caring enough to get in shape. Don't let the look deceive you, Big G is very much in shape and just so you know he weighed in at 301 and trains everyday whether he is preparing for a fight or not. When was the last time you woke up at six in the morning and ran 5 miles or even 1 mile?? From the looks of your head shot above I can see you're no super model either, but I won't discredit the way you look. I can say your article is trash and if out of all the events that went on at the Garden on Saturday night the only thing you cared to share was a lie about Big G's weight, that is sad.
I was at MSG and I am a true fan of boxing and "Big G". I was very much satisfied with all of the under cards.

The best confirmation that MDS speaks the truth isn't Guinn's opponent who clearly knows his way around a knife and fork--it was the horrendous undercard on the Mayweather/De La Hoya fight which was so dull that Jim Lampley repeatedly made fun of it. Way to promote your sport on the biggest PPV event in history...

In all fairness, MMA has its weak undercards as well--particularly the UFC. With the exception of the Florian/Stevenson matchup, the undercard for the Lesnar/Couture PPV was weak on paper going in. The fact that all of the fights ended quickly, leaving the UFC to throw in some taped prelims to fill time, made the undercard seem even more irrelevant....making matters worse, the KFlo/Stevenson match ended up being very one sided as well...
