Boxing is a sport on the decline in the United States, a sport that's not as popular as it used to be and that doesn't capture the imaginations of young people. But the American boxer Paulie Malignaggi has a simple idea for how to change that: Promote boxers like himself.
Malignaggi, who will fight Ricky Hatton on Saturday night for the world junior welterweight championship, told me today that young American boxers like himself need to get more attention from promoters and the media, who focus too much (in Malignaggi's view) on older boxers and boxers from other countries.
"We're relying too much on old stars, the old names to keep us afloat," Malignaggi said. "Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones, they won't be fighting much longer and we need young stars to take their place. Fans want to see young stars, not old guys."
Malignaggi added that while there are many great boxers outside the United States, he wishes American promoters would work harder to promote American boxers.
"We have good young fighters right now, good young champions, but we're too busy promoting foreign fighters," said Malignaggi, who was born and raised in Brooklyn.
Malignaggi has a long way to go before he's a household name like De La Hoya and Jones, but a win over Hatton on Saturday night would be a major step toward getting there.

To those upcoming super stars....remember your success is determined by your different! Check out this article by Robb Thompson:
If we are honest with ourselves, we will concede that rising to a higher level doesn't happen automatically. I wish that effortless excellence were possible, but life is built by choices - not by luck. Different choices point us down drastically different paths. Prosperity won't come our way because we are nice people or because we wish for it to magically appear out of thin air. We can, however, achieve success by harnessing our goal-oriented desire and combining it with avid pursuit.
Consider this quote by James Allen: "Achievement is the crown of effort." What is the key word in Mr. Allen's statement? Effort. The effort you are willing to put forth toward increasing your personal value is the determining factor to your level of distinction. No significant achievement in all of history came without a significant price.
Below I've formulated three easy steps that are sure to guarantee personal distinction for anyone:
1. Know where you are going.
2. Determine to reach the next level of excellence.
3. Refuse to embrace mediocrity.
Success is only a dream to those who talk about it in the future tense, but success is a reality for those who embrace it in their present. Many people flippantly babble on about all the great things they are going to achieve in their lives but, without a focused pursuit, it is impossible to achieve them.
Certainly, we all need a tangible vision to fulfill, an attainable goal to pursue, and personal dreams to achieve. Yet these are worthless if all we do is sit around the neighborhood coffee shop and talk about them. Please don't misunderstand me; I've been guilty of doing this very thing. At times, I've chattered on and on about dreams I've wanted to see fulfilled, without ever doing anything to make them happen. With every dream, however, there comes a moment in which action must be taken.
