Appearing in the main event of the March Badness show he promoted, Roy Jones Jr. defeated Omar Sheika Saturday night in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida.Jones was clearly faster and more skilled than Sheika, and after the first round it was obvious that Sheika didn't belong in the same ring with Jones. The hand speed that made Jones the best boxer in the world in the 1990s might have diminished somewhat, but it's still far beyond anything Sheika could handle. Jones never knocked Sheika down, but he so out-classed him that in the fifth round, the ref had seen enough and called a halt to the fight.
Some observers might question the decision to stop the fight, but it was the right call: Sheika wasn't doing anything except serving as a heavy bag for Jones. The fight came to an end at the right time.
Still fighting at age 40, Jones is well past his prime. But he remains able to draw an enthusiastic crowd in Pensacola, and his name can still convince boxing fans to purchase a pay-per-view. Jones is also now a full-fledged promoter, and his Square Ring Promotions company put together a mixed martial arts undercard that was respectable if not spectacular.
And respectable if not spectacular pretty well describes Jones at this point in his boxing career. He'll never be the best in the world again, but he could keep fighting for several more years. Maybe even until he's 50.

i think at 40 most boxers with the money roy has he should get into promoting younger fighters because watching has beens/out of prime is not giving true boxing fans their monies worth!!

I was at the fight and Roy put on a great show for the fans. I'm from the Pensacola area (maybe 1 hour away) and Roy is an iconic figure here. We want to see the man fight especially when he isn't making himself look bad i.e. the calzaghe fight.

I did'nt see the fight but, looking impressive against an outclassed and shot Omar Sheika does'nt prove anything. If Roy's thing is to go on tour around the country against carefully chosen opponents then more power to him. He still has a lot of fans who will shell out money to see him and as long as he wins they will come. If his goal however is to fight against a live opponent or for the title then he's risking a beating. Although he still has some of his once amazing skills he's a mere facscimile of the fighter who was head and shoulders above everyone else. Against Calzaghe he got hit more than he had ever been hit thru out his carreer including his two losses to Tarver and Johnson. It's time to make your money behind the scenes and be able to enjoy it with all your marbles intact.

Sheika is not just some tomato can. If Roy want to make a title run he have to build himself back up. I would like to see him fight Hopkins at some point before either retires. That is a big money fight with two legends at the end of their careers. If hopkins can dominate Pavlik then Roy can also have some glory.
