Arturo Gatti, the boxing great who was killed last weekend in Brazil, will always be remembered for his three epic fights with Micky Ward -- a trilogy as good as any in boxing history. Ward said this week that he was shocked by the death of Gatti, whose wife is currently in custody and charged with his murder.
"I was absolutely stunned -- I couldn't believe it, it's still kind of hard to believe," Ward told ESPN's Brian Kenny. "It's really hard to take."
Ward also said that for as furiously as he and Gatti attacked each other in the ring, they cared for each other on a personal level.
"When we went in there and we fought, we tried to take each other's head off, but outside the ring we had respect for each other," Ward said. "After the three fights we had it built into a better friendship, a long-lasting relationship."
HBO will show all three Ward-Gatti fights Saturday morning beginning at 10:15 AM ET. No boxing fan should miss these fights.
