SAO PAULO (AP) -- An autopsy indicates former boxing champion Arturo Gatti may have committed suicide, been accidentally killed or murdered, according to a Brazilian newspaper that said it obtained a copy of the coroner's initial findings.Police have said they are certain Gatti's 23-year-old wife strangled the boxer with her purse strap as he drunkenly slept July 11, but the autopsy report raises some doubts.
Gatti was found dead in the apartment he was renting with wife Amanda Rodrigues in the Brazilian seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas in the northeastern state of Pernambuco.
In the state capital of Recife, the Jornal do Comercio newspaper reported Saturday that the autopsy findings it obtained stated Gatti's body was "suspended and hanged, indicating he may have committed suicide.''
The autopsy report, according to the newspaper, also said that "murder or accidental death'' could not be ruled out. There was no explanation for ``accidental death.''
Paula Cysneiros, the spokeswoman for the medical examiners office that performed the autopsy, would not confirm the newspaper's report.
Police arrested Rodrigues on suspicion of murdering the former two-division champion. She maintains her innocence and is being held in a prison in Recife. She has not been charged - according to Brazilian law, police have until this Wednesday to hand over their findings to prosecutors, who will decide if charges are to be filed.
A visitation for Gatti is scheduled for Sunday at Maison Funeraire Magnus Poirier in his adopted hometown of Montreal, with a funeral on Monday at Notre Dame De La Defense.

Rodrigues told investigators she awoke July 11 and found her husband's body about 9 a.m. She then called police.
Investigators said she was the only suspect and they are certain she killed Gatti in the apartment where they and their 10-month-old son arrived for a second honeymoon. The boy was unhurt and was in the care of Rodrigues' family.
Investigators said there was no sign of forced entry and that the electronic locks on the apartment indicated only Gatti and his wife had entered it.
Police said Gatti had marks on his throat, indicating he was strangled.
Rodrigues' sister, Flavia, told the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo earlier this week that there is "no way she could have strangled a man of that size.''
Rodrigues' attorney, Celio Avelino, told The Associated Press that he agreed.
"She is fragile, young and skinny - how could she kill a boxing champion?'' Avelino said. "When she awoke, she presumed he had committed suicide. But she had nothing to do with it.''
Police also said there was a knife wound in the back of Gatti's head and displayed a small steak knife along with the bloodied, white purse strap - both found near his body.
Citing the results of the autopsy, the Jornal do Comercio newspaper said the wound "may have occurred when the body fell to the floor.''
Police have also said they think the crime scene had been altered before they arrived - indicating that Rodrigues could have tried to make it appear as if Gatti had committed suicide, police spokeswoman Milena Saraiva told the AP earlier this week.
Saraiva said the death may have been premeditated and Rodrigues may have encouraged Gatti to drink excessively so she would be able to overpower him later.
Rodrigues, in a letter given to the AP on Wednesday, said she didn't commit the crime.
"I'm innocent and I know that this will be proven in a few days,'' she wrote in the letter. She ended the note by addressing the couple's infant son, writing: "Junior - soon mama will be at home!''

suicide yeah right- when someone like the police who have seen their share of suicides on the job come to a scene with a dead body suicide is always a possibility but obviously when they came to this room something just seemed out of the ordinary and their experience in suicide scenes and her story just did not add up. She could've tried to hang him to make it appear like a suicide but then decided to take him down- I don't buy it

the answer is easy nikole- SHE HAD HELP- it happened in Brazil, she is Brazilian, she could' ve called an old boyfriend or current lover to help her- who knows what happened- they could've tried to stage the hanging but realized it was a bad idea because a coroner might be able to determine he died before the hanging and so they decide to take down the body-I don't know the reasons but it was a long time lapse before the police were called. The sad part is that I already know the outcome is going to be not guilty and this bitch is going to get away with it-

nikole, fyi... arturo gatti was a LIGHTWEIGHT boxer. Which means he weighed around 125-130lbs. His height was 5'5". My 12 year old niece can lift a man that size. He was a great fighter, and a champion, and an extremely tough man, but not a LARGE man..

It's easy to see that Arturo's wife is already paying off the right people in Brazilian "justice." Sadly enough by the time this investigation ends brazilian police will have blamed this murder on David Goldman. Let the oddysey begin.

Very nice... a knife wound to the back of the head, blood on purse strap of the person wha admitted being in the room with him, and it might have been a suicide.
It might have been... try knifing yourself in the back of the head.
This is domestic voilence. Woman on man. How would this article have read if the woman was found with a knife wound to the back of the head and blood on the man's belt (or other article of clothing)?

This sounds like a case of the "Keystone cops and coronor" in action. They seem to be including every possible senerio to make themselves look competent...either that or the writer of this story is leaving out some informaton...was he hanging from a rope, was in lying in the bed? were there marks on this neck. If she was a small woman, as indicated by the sister how could she had picked him up to put noose around neck and hang him up? Did they just pick a purse from her closet and say this is the one? Leaves alot of questions...making them look like a "fumble job."

Keep in mind that the cops doing the investigation are Brazalian and not the brightest CSI team in the world . My God someone please explain how such a small skinny female ,SHE IS, (I have seen her). Could ever over power such a "Strong, in shape, power house of a puncher,( unless he was under the influence and nearly comatose) Now explain how she could lift him ,suspended him up from the ceiling. All by her tiny little self .The wound to his head could have been from being cut down and falling to the floor or perhaps from him staggering around trying to find something to use"(her purse strap") to hang himself with, They say that 95% of men who attempt suicide get it right the first time. They always fought because of him being jealous of her choice in clothes while in Brazil, he said it was sleazy and other men paid attention to her and he didnt like it.
Sad, they both should have paid more attention to one guy, their Son.
And now how awful is this the wife will not be able to go to her husbands funeral because she is being detained but, not yet charged service is Monday they can hold her until Wed and then charge her or release on Wed how screwed is that system.

Corina, if you are going to attempt to bag on Brazil and their level of education, at least learn how to spell the name of the country. I have worked with the Brazilian police and their forensics are up to scratch with that of the United States. As for those who are saying his wife paid off the police in an act "Brazilian Justice," let me reassure you that as the wife of a murdered athlete in a latin country, if anything the deck was stacked against her. The truth is that none of us here know what the heck happened, but as usual everyone on AOL is just dying to criticize others, nevermind the facts.

When a woman is accused society must make every effort to find ANY other reason or person to blame. Can we not treat them as regular adults?
