Fernando Guerrero Rises to 16-0; Juan Santiago KOs Ty Barnett in One Round

Fernando Guerrero of Salisbury, Md., remained unbeaten, earning a 10-round majority decision Saturday night over a tough Ossie Duran, before a hometown crowd at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The 22-year-old middleweight improved to 16-0 with 13 knockouts thanks to scores of 97-93 on the cards of two judges, and 95-95 on that of the third as Duran slipped to 23-8-2 with nine KOs.

In victory, Guerrero earned the interim NABO title.

Guerrero controlled the fight and dazed Duran a couple of times, but was head-butted by Duran, later requiring five stitches to repair the damage.

In a shocker, Ty Barnett (16-1-1, 11 KOs), of Washington, D.C., was stopped cold with three seconds left in the first round, thanks to an overhand right and several unanswered blows from Denver's Juan Santiago, (10-2-1, seven KOs) in their scheduled, eight-round, lightweight (135) matchup.

The previously unbeaten Barnett was looking to improve his stock following a recent victory over 2000 Olympian Jose Leonardo Cruz, of Rochester, N.Y.

In a cruiserweight (200) matchup, Salisbury's Alex Guerrero won his rematch with Rodricka Ray (2-4-1, one KO) of Jackson, TN., earning a 40-36 tally on all three judges' cards for his second straight win without a loss.
