Former world champion Winky Wright will return from an eight-month layoff when he enters the ring against Grady Brewer on Dec. 11 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan.A southpaw who will turn 38 on Nov. 26, Wright is coming off of consecutive losses by decision to Bernard Hopkins and Paul Williams in July 2007 and this past April, respectively.
Wright (51-5-1, 25 knockouts) owns victories over former world champs Shane Mosley and Felix Trinidad, and fought to a disputed draw with former undisputed middleweight (160 pounds) champion Jermain Taylor.
"Puerto Rico is great place to have this fight, because it is deep in boxing history and tradition with the Puerto Rican people embracing the sport like very few places around the world," said Wright, who will face Brewer in the middleweight (160 pounds) class.
"Tito [Trinidad] and I have become great friends, and each time I come to visit, I have been ingratiated by the fans who love and appreciate boxing so much," said Wright. "It will be an honor for me to fight in front of them on December 11."
Brewer, who will turn 39 on Dec. 22, is riding an eight-fight winning streak -- inlcluding first- and, second-round knockouts of his past two opponents in May and August.
"I appreciate the opportunity to fight Winky Wright in a place where boxing has been followed and understood for so long," said Brewer, who was the winner of "The Contender" reality series' second season.
"The fans might not know me like they know Winky," said Brewer, "but they will know me a lot better after I beat him that night."
Promoted by Winky Wright as well as Knockout Entertainment Inc., the card also features WBO light flyweight (108 pounds) champion Alex Sanchez (31-7-1, 21 KOs) of Puerto Rico.
"Boxing is my life and I feel confident that I can get back to the top of my game with a win December 11," said Sanchez "To fight one more time for my people on the same card as the great champion Winky Wright and to do it at the Coilseo is a blessing I will never forget."
Also on the card in seperate bouts are the Velasquez twins, super featherweight (130) Carlos Ivan Velasquez (11-0, nine KOs) of Miami, and super bantamweight (122) Juan Carlos Velasquez (9-1, five KOs) of Puerto Rico.
The siblings are 25 years old.
Also competing is welterweight (147) Eliezer Gonzalez (5-0, two KOs) of Puerto Rico.
