Jorge Linares took a fight this weekend with Juan Carlos Salgado in Tokyo mostly as a quick and easy payday. Linares had a 27-0 record and the WBA super featherweight belt, and no one thought Salgado was in his league. Unfortunately for Linares, Salgado didn't get the memo.

Instead of Linares easily beating Salgado, it was Salgado who leveled Linares with a brutal right hand less than a minute into the fight, and then charged across the ring as soon as Linares got back up and dropped him again. Linares staggered to his feet, but referee Luis Pabon made the correct decision to stop the fight, and it was over just 1:13 into the first round.

How big an upset was this? The Queensberry Rules calls it the upset of the year. The odds I saw had Linares as a -1400 favorite; if you had bet $10 on Salgado you would have won $80. Upsets like this just don't happen in boxing. But it happened Saturday in Tokyo, and now Juan Carlos Salgado is the WBA super featherweight champion.
