Freddie Roach is one of the world's best known boxing trainers, having worked prepared Oscar De La Hoya to fight Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao to fight Juan Manuel Marquez and David Diaz, and several other top boxers for high-profile fights.

So the fact that Roach is training mixed martial arts heavyweight Andrei Arlovski for his fight in the upcoming Affliction: Banned show could be seen by some as a sign of the way mixed martial arts is on the rise and boxing is on the decline. But Roach doesn't see it that way. In a conference call to promote the Affliction show today, Roach had this to say:
"I really never had any problem with MMA fighters. I think that both sports are great sports and fight fans are fight fans. ... A lot of boxing people dislike the MMA style of fighting, but I'm a fight fan. Any kind of fighting, I like it."
I feel the same way as Roach -- whether it's boxing or MMA or judo or taekwondo or wrestling or whatever, I like to see two competitors squaring off, and I'm always a little surprised by how many people act as though you have to choose between being either a boxing fan or an MMA fan.


As for what Roach is teaching Arlovski, he said it's simple: "I don't know much about the ground game. I wrestled in high school and that's all I know. I'm just working with him on the stand-up game. ... I just teach him boxing like I would any heavyweight I have."

Said Arlovski of working with Roach, "I was really happy that Freddie let me train with him because I know there's a big line to wait to train with Freddie Roach."

Oscar De La Hoya is both the most popular boxer in the United States and the most powerful boxing promoter in the United States, so the announcement that De La Hoya has agreed to work with USA Boxing is very good news for the state of amateur boxing in this country.

De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions has announced that it will begin collaborating with USA Boxing, the national governing body for amateur boxing, on marketing efforts that will help raise the sport's profile:
"Golden Boy Promotions has set the gold standard in terms of a top-quality approach to the sport and business of boxing," said USA Boxing CEO Jim Millman. "This alliance will help USA Boxing accelerate its growth and development in many areas, while giving our elite athletes the benefit of more time spent with Oscar de la Hoya."
De La Hoya was one of America's top amateur boxers, winning America's only gold medal in the 1992 Olympics, and now, as he prepares to leave the sport, he's looking for ways to give back. Good for him.

On Saturday night, referee Joe Cortez disqualified boxer Humberto Soto for an illegal punch in his WBC super featherweight title fight against Francisco Lorenzo. I and nearly all observers thought it was a bad decision by Cortez, but Soto says it was more than that: According to Soto, it was a racist decision:

In that video, Soto said in Spanish, "I think the ref is a racist. Everyone watching saw me win the fight." Cortez is Puerto Rican, Soto is Mexican and Lorenzo is Dominican.

Cortez completely botched the ending of the fight, which Soto had dominated before Cortez ruled that Soto hit Lorenzo when Lorenzo was down. But suggesting that Cortez was motivated by racism is a hell of an accusation, and Soto provides no evidence. Refs screw up sometimes. That doesn't mean there are ulterior motives.

Manny Pacquiao is the world's best boxer, but from the looks of the crowd at his fight Saturday night, the American public hasn't fully embraced him. The Mandalay Bay failed to sell out, with a rather paltry crowd of 8,362.

So what was the problem? Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, says he knows who's to blame:

"There's one guy you can blame, and that's George Bush," Arum said. "With gasoline prices the way they are, people just can't afford to come in from California."

Arum wasn't done there; he's also quoted as saying, "I don't care if it's Obama or McCain. We want a change and we're going to get a change. These eight years have been the worst eight years that I can remember in the United States."

So if President Bush has now lost the support of rich white men like Arum, who exactly makes up the 25% or so of the country who still like him?

Before he put the finishing touches on David Diaz, boxing fans started wondering who Manny Pacquiao would fight next. Names like Nate Campbell and Ricky Hatton got tossed around but, as our own MDS mentioned, promoter Bob Arum kept talking about was Edwin Valero. Arum went even further in a telephone interview yesterday. Via Bad Left Hook,
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports, Arum said that he was "pretty close to making a deal with (Akihiko) Honda", the well-known Japanese businessman-sportsman who handles Valero, adding "hopefully I will be able to finalize it tomorrow (Monday in the US)"
The fight makes a lot of sense for both men. Valero is having trouble making weight at 130 so moving up is a natural progression while Pacquiao would like to get one defense under his belt before trying to make a fight with seasoned lightweights like Joel Casamayor (if he beats two-time Pacman foe Juan Manuel Marquez) or Campbell.

The only snag could be Valero's failure to gain medical clearance from any state other than Texas. Arum said he'd like to make the fight in Vegas, probably in November, so that's a stumbling block but likely a minor one. Valero's won all 24 of his fights by knockout but has never faced anyone close to Pacquiao. Vanquishing a fighter with that pedigree will only burnish Pacquiao as he moves on to other big fights down the line.

Here's a look at upcoming title and televised bouts for the month of July. It's a pretty light month until July 26 when undefeated Miguel Cotto defends his welterweight title against Antonio Margarito. It's a bout worthy of pay-per-view as both men come in full of confidence and fighting as well as they ever have. Margarito will keep coming no matter what kind of bombs Cotto throws his way and Cotto has rarely been tested by a fighter with Margarito's ability. The winner will unquestionably be the best welterweight in the world.

The other fight that will garner a lot of attention will be Wladimir Klitschko's heavyweight title defense against Tony Thompson. There's not as much question about who will be left standing at the end of this one, Klitschko's a heavy favorite, but lingering questions about the champ's chin should make this a must-see as well. Make no mistake, though, Cotto-Margarito is the one fight you can't miss this month.

We're less than 12 hours removed from Manny Pacquiao's knockout of David Diaz, and already the question must be asked: Who does Pacquiao fight next? Here are a few possibilities:

Nate Campbell: This would be an excellent fight, with the winner potentially unifying the lightweight title belts of all four sanctioning bodies.

Edwin Valero: Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum, says Pacquiao will stay at lightweight to defend the WBC title he won last night, and Valero is the one name he mentioned as a possible opponent.

Joel Casamayor: The Ring Magazine lightweight champ faces Juan Manuel Marquez in September; if he wins he'd be a natural opponent for Pacquiao, but probably not until early next year.

Humberto Soto: On last night's undercard, Soto lost a dubious disqualification after dominating Francisco Lorenzo.

Amir Khan: Has been discussed as a possible opponent, but probably isn't ready for Pacquiao.

Ricky Hatton: It would be a huge fight, if Pacquiao is willing to move up in weight class again. This won't happen in 2008 but could happen in 2009.

Manny Pacqiuao knocked out David Diaz tonight in Las Vegas with a sensational showing, one that electrified the crowd and solidified the Filipino's spot atop the boxing world.

The WBC lightweight title was on the line, giving Pacquiao his fourth different weight class title. But more significantly, Pacquiao entered the ring for the first time atop the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound rankings. He'll certainly stay atop those ratings: He's the best boxer in the world.

Diaz showed tremendous heart and courage, refusing to back down no matter how many times Pacquiao punched him. Pacquiao was a vastly superior fighter, and the official FanHouse scorecard had Pacquiao winning every round of the fight. It was as dominant a showing as you'll ever see.

Pacquiao improved his record to 47-3-2. Diaz fell to 34-2-1.

No American boxer is popular enough to have a preview of one of his fights be the lead, front page story in a major newspaper. But in the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao's popularity makes him the nation's biggest news (along with gas prices, which are big news everywhere).

Pacquiao's fight tonight against Chicago's David Diaz is for the WBC lightweight title and, more importantly, for Pacquiao to stake his claim as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
That front-page article is a great look at Pacquiao's strategy for winning the fight, and it's to the credit of Philippine Daily Inquirer reports Recah Trinidad that the article isn't a puff piece that tells Pacquiao fans what they want to hear. It offers a clear-eyed and even skeptical assessment of Pacquiao's chances:

Dangers do lurk for the highly favored Filipino boxing superhero.

For one, it was neither wise nor fair to claim that Pacquiao could not be bothered by a southpaw like Diaz.

A flashback would reveal that the first knockout in Pacquiao's career came courtesy of a left hook to the chin by Rustico Torrecampo, a southpaw.

Next, Pacquiao went down cockeyed after absorbing a stiff left straight to the tip of the chin from Nedal Hussein at the Casino Filipino, requiring timely assistance from a very patriotic Pinoy referee, which enabled the Pacman to get up and resume fighting.

It was also a thumping left to the rib cage that visibly jarred Pacquiao in the middle rounds of his last fight against Juan Manuel Marquez--a sight that prompted an American analyst to state that "Pacquiao was not invincible after all."

Having said all that, I think Pacquiao will win, with a late-round knockout.

Chicagoan David Diaz will be a huge underdog when he steps into the ring with the Philippines' Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night, but he's talking like a guy who exudes confidence.

Speaking at a press event yesterday where the reporters were much more interested in talking to Pacquiao, Diaz said this to Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review Journal:
"If I were Manny Pacquiao, I would be concerned about my will. I will be there the entire fight, and I will stay there the entire fight."
Diaz isn't talking trash about Pacquiao -- he also said,"He's done a lot for boxing. I just became champion" -- but he is talking like someone who has a lot more confidence in himself than just about anyone else has in him.

If David Diaz is looking for motivation for his fight Saturday night with Manny Pacquiao, he could do a lot worse than to read the story by Steve Carpl in today's Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The story makes clear that Pacquiao isn't looking past Diaz, but it also demonstrates that just about everyone around Pacquiao is assuming that he's going to beat Diaz and then move on to more lucrative fights against more famous opponents, especially a third fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, sees the fight happening as long as Marquez beats Joel Casamayor, and he sounds as if he thinks Diaz is little more than a speed bump. That's what the betting public seems to think, as Pacquiao is a heavy favorite.

I guess I'm in the minority, because while I expect Pacquiao to win, I think Diaz is going to give Pacquaio a good, competitive fight Saturday night -- and I think it's way too soon to be talking about fighting Marquez again.

Manny Pacquiao is on a seven-fight winning streak at 130 pounds and has basically cleared out the junior lightweight division.

So now he's moving up to a new challenge at 135 pounds, where he'll take on WBC lightweight title holder David Diaz Saturday night, and Norm Frauenheim of the Arizona Republic writes that he's fighting not just for the lightweight title, but for the pound-for-pound title. I think that sounds right.

Now that Floyd Mayweather is retired, Ring Magazine ranks Pacquiao atop its pound-for-pound ratings, and beating Diaz would solidify that. Although there are several other fighters who can stake a claim for the top pound-for-pound spot -- Joe Calzaghe, Juan Manuel Marquez, Kelly Pavlik -- none has had as many great performances in the last few years as Pacquiao has. If Pacquiao puts on another impressive showing in another weight class, he'll show that he's the best in the world.

Moments after German boxer Arthur Abraham knocked out Edison Miranda Saturday night in Florida, his brother was arrested and charged with assault and battery for allegedly kicking Miranda while the ringside doctor was attending to him.

Alexander Abraham, who in addition to being Arthur's brother is a junior middleweight boxer with a 21-0-1 record, was arrested after the fight by Seminole tribal police, who then turned him over to the Broward Sheriff's Office. He made bail Sunday morning.

Miranda's manager released a statement saying:
"Alex immediately jumped into the ring and ran right up to Miranda while he was lying on his back and begin taunting him and saying disgraceful things and making disgraceful gestures. He actually starting kicking at Miranda's feet. I'm not sure if he actually hit Miranda or hit the mat next to Miranda's feet. This all happened while the doctor was trying to examine Miranda while he was lying on the the mat."
The Abraham camp released a statement from Alexander saying,"I did not violently attack Miranda or any of his team. It was completely the other way around - our team was attacked by Miranda's people with chairs."

The Florida State Athletic Commission will review the matter and could fine Arthur Abraham as much as $100,000.

Arthur Abraham knocked out Edison Miranda in the fourth round of a tough fight tonight in Florida, winning his first fight on American soil and impressing American boxing fans the way he's impressed German fans for years.

Abraham said afterward that he'd like to fight either Oscar De La Hoya or Kelly Pavlik next; either one would be a huge fight both here and in Europe.

Tonight's fight was a rematch of their 2006 brawl, which Abraham won by unanimous decision. That fight was notable for Miranda getting an incredible five points deducted for fouls. This time Miranda hit Abraham with a low blow in the second round, but it was a cleaner fight, and a more dominant performance for Abraham. He's the real deal, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Abraham improves to 27-0. Miranda drops to 30-3.

America's most popular boxer, Oscar De La Hoya, has one bout left in his career, in December -- but he doesn't know who he'll fight.

De La Hoya told ESPN.com that he knows he will fight one more time, on December 6, before retiring. But he still needs to find an opponent, after Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton -- the two fighters who could generate the most pay-per-view buys -- both turned him down. The next-best choice would be Miguel Cotto, although he still has a tough fight against Antonio Margarito on July 26 before he can plan anything beyond that.


One way or another, De La Hoya says he's confident he's going to put on a great show in his farewell fight. But it takes two to make a great boxing match, and De La Hoya, for all his business acumen, so far hasn't managed to get a good opponent to sign on the dotted line.

We noted this morning that a witness in the trial of a gang leader testified yesterday that Mike Tyson once put up $50,000 as part of a hit on drug dealers who killed a friend of his.

That's just one witness's claim, and Tyson does not appear to be a suspect in any crime. But it's fascinating to remember, as FanHouse commenter Dean did, that Tyson once made a bizarre comment about killing drug dealers for money.

After he lost to Kevin McBride in the last fight of his career on June 11, 2005, Tyson made these rambling comments:

"It's finished. I can't do this no more. I can't lie to myself, I have too much respect for the sport and I don't intend to embarrass it any more."

He now plans to do missionary work in Africa after insisting he wants a job that will give his life meaning.

He added: "I don't know what happens to me now but the Christian work that is going on in places like Botswana, Rwanda and maybe the Sudan appeals to me.

"I'm just changing my life. I could kill drug dealers for money but I don't want to do that. I want to go down a different route."

It was three years and one day after those comments that a witness alleged that Tyson had once been interested in paying someone to kill drug dealers.

A government witness testified yesterday during the trial of an accused gang leader that Mike Tyson once paid $50,000 to have members of a gang of drug dealers murdered.

"We got word Mike Tyson and [another man] had both contributed $50,000 apiece for the murders of Cash Money Brothers," witness Dwayne Meyers testified. If Tyson did, in fact, put a hit out on the Cash Money Brothers, nothing ever came of it. They were not murdered.

According to the witness, Tyson's motive was that the Cash Money Brothers murdered his boyhood friend, Darryl Baum, in June of 2000. Boxing fans will remember that Baum's murder nearly caused Tyson's June 24, 2000, fight with Lou Savarese to be delayed. After Tyson beat Savarese, he dedicated the fight to Baum and said, "I love you with all my heart . . . Oh, God, I'm mad."

Baum is believed to be the man who shot the rapper 50 Cent in May of 2000, and there has been speculation that Baum's murder was connected to that shooting. However, there is no ill will between 50 Cent and Tyson; in 2003 50 Cent bought Tyson's house for $4.1 million.

Nobody wants to get in the ring with Oscar De La Hoya. After his tentative rematch with Floyd Mayweather on September 20th was canceled because Mayweather announced his retirement, De La Hoya approached Ricky Hatton about filling the date. Hatton is taking a pass, however.

"It would be too soon, Richard only fought two weeks ago," Ray Hatton, the boxing champion's father and manager, told British Broadcasting Corp. Sport. "Oscar likes to fight in September because of Mexican Independence Day, but Richard is chilling out at the moment."

Hatton beat Juan Lazcano on May 24th and is slated to meet junior welterweight titleholder Paulie Malignaggi sometime in the fall. He was also angling for a rematch with Mayweather, who stopped him in the 10th round of their December bout.

De La Hoya dropped to 150 pounds for his May fight with Steve Forbes but that's still 10 pounds above Hatton's most comfortable weight. It would be a poor choice for Hatton who is better served by taking on Malignaggi and then trying to work out a fight with Manny Pacquiao after that. It wouldn't be quite as much money as a De La Hoya fight but it would be a dandy and one that he'd be more likely to win.

As for De La Hoya, there aren't a ton of options out there. Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito fight in July which means neither would be ready for September. He could try and make a fight with Verno Phillips, perhaps, or a third fight with Shane Mosley but both would lack the sizzle of a must-see. His camp has promised a forthcoming announcement about a fight for September but it doesn't look like one that will be a blockbuster.
